Revealed earlier today, the initiative represents Ubisoft’s latest push into transmedia, following multiple collaborations with Netflix over the past decade and its involvement in developing Apple TV+’s Mythic Quest. The Far Cry adaptation will take the form of an anthology series, with each season set in a new location and centered on an entirely new cast.

Executive producing the show are Rob Mac (It’s Always Sunny in PhiladelphiaMythic Quest), working under his More Better Productions banner and also slated to appear in the series, alongside Noah Hawley (FargoAlien: Earth), via his 26 Keys production company.

“Working with Noah Hawley is a dream come true,” Mac said in the announcement. “Ubisoft has been incredibly generous in trusting us with one of the most iconic worlds in video games.”

This live-action Far Cry series is not the franchise’s first step into transmedia. In 2023, Ubisoft Film & Television and Netflix released the animated series Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, which drew on characters and settings from across Ubisoft’s portfolio.

Nor is it the only such project currently underway. In July, Ubisoft and Netflix officially greenlit a live-action Assassin’s Creed series, five years after first announcing their partnership. That project is being led by creators, showrunners, and executive producers Roberto Patino and David Wiener, the latter of whom also served as an executive producer on the Halo adaptation.

Additionally, the companies premiered Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, an animated series based on Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, on October 14—nearly a year after Ubisoft cancelled a planned film adaptation of the franchise.

Transmedia projects have been a major focus for many video game companies this year. Examples include Activision’s live-action Call of Duty movie, Nintendo’s expansion into film with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and an upcoming Legend of Zelda adaptation, as well as several projects tied to Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding universe.

“What I love about the Far Cry franchise is that it’s inherently an anthology,” Hawley said. “Each game offers a different take on a shared theme, much like each season of Fargo. The chance to make a large-scale action series that can reinvent itself year after year, while consistently examining human nature through a complex and chaotic lens, is a dream come true.”

Now Far cry is a legendary franchise, hopefully they don’t ruin the adaptation, do you think it will be good?
