Paradox Interactive has recorded a SEK 355 million ($37.4 million) write-down in capitalized development costs after Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 failed to meet sales expectations.

The Swedish publisher said the impairment follows a revised sales forecast prepared roughly 30 days after the game’s release.

While Paradox praised the efforts of developer Sumo Digital—who assumed control of the project in 2023 after several earlier development teams were taken off the title—it acknowledged that the sequel has underperformed commercially.

“We’ve held high expectations for a long time, having believed this was a strong game built on a powerful IP within a broadly appealing genre,” Paradox CEO Fredrik Wester said in a statement to investors. “Unfortunately, a month after launch, it’s clear that sales are not in line with our projections, making this write-down necessary.”

Wester emphasized that responsibility rests with Paradox as the publisher. “The game sits outside our core focus areas, and in hindsight that made it harder for us to accurately assess sales potential. Going forward, we’ll concentrate our investments on our core segments while reassessing how best to develop the World of Darkness brand portfolio.”

However, players shouldn’t expect support to stop. Paradox confirmed it still plans to release two expansions for Bloodlines 2 over the next year. “Our post-launch roadmap remains unchanged,” Wester added.
